The GDAA's Pre-PAXAus 'Welcome to Melbourne' event was a smashing success! Hosted 46 floors above street level with an amazing view of Melbourne, and filled with some of our favourite game devs, the event was attended by media and guests from interstate and overseas. The staff was decked out in our Yolk'Em t-shirts, acting as moving AR markers throughout the night, while we demoed the game throughout the evening. Minister Asher kicked off the proceedings for the evening, speaking of how thrilled she was to have so many developers, and PAXAus itself, here in Melbourne. Likewise Tony Reed of the GDAA shared some short but passionate words about the talent we have. Aaron had a chance to catch up with Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins who played a round of Yolk'Em, quite enjoying it!
PAX itself was a fun filled sensory overload. Paul, Ali, Matt, Simon, Darcy and Chen-Po all made their way to the Melbourne Showgrounds for three days of games and pop culture. While we had seen a lot of upcoming releases at the Welcome to Melbourne event, the ANZ Indie Pavilion contained even more. From long time developers to those demoing their work for the first time, the showcase was a fantastic snapshot of everything going on in Australian games. Add an excited, compassionate, supportive crowd, and it made for a great weekend for games.
Matt joined others from the Australian games industry for The Ultimate Industry Quiz Showdown, a lighthearted fun panel hosted by New Game Plus, where two industry teams battled it out with their knowledge of video games. Both teams did well, until the audience had a chance to contribute their own questions. Whether it was the technical name for Portal's portal gun, or the Australian release date for the original Playstation, the entire panel was quickly stumped by the audience's own collective knowledge of games!
It was wonderful having PAX come to Australia, proving itself to be an event in a league of its own. We're already looking forward to its 2014 return!
